West Coast - Trapper and Miner Route to Fridtjov Glacier

Your journey begins in Longyearbyen, where you meet your guide, receive a full safety briefing, and get equipped with all necessary Arctic gear. Once ready, you set off into the wilderness, leaving the settlement behind as the landscape opens into a vast network of valleys, frozen fjords, and coastal plains.

This route follows the west coast toward the remote Fridtjofbreen area, taking you across varied terrain including wide valleys, glacier fronts, and sea ice conditions depending on the season. Along the way, you’ll experience the raw scale and diversity of the Arctic landscape, with constantly changing views over Isfjorden and the open sea.

As you travel, you’ll pass remnants of Svalbard’s past — abandoned mining installations, old hunting cabins, and traces of the trappers and workers who once lived in these remote and unforgiving environments. Your guide will bring these places to life, sharing stories about Arctic survival, exploration, and the history that shaped this region.

One of the highlights of the tour is Fridtjofbreen, where we stop to admire the impressive glacier front. Here, massive ice formations meet the surrounding mountains, creating a powerful and unforgettable Arctic scene. We take time to explore the area, capture photos, and fully absorb the silence and scale of the environment.

Wildlife sightings are possible throughout the journey, especially Svalbard reindeer moving across valleys and coastal areas. With some luck, you may also spot Arctic foxes or seabirds depending on conditions.

The ride is designed to balance driving and exploration, with regular stops to take in the scenery, photograph the landscape, and learn more about the natural and cultural history of the west coast.

There is no visit to Barentsburg on this tour; instead, the focus remains on untouched nature, the Fridtjofbreen glacier, and the unique combination of Arctic wilderness and historical traces found along this remote coastline.

This is a true full-day Arctic expedition, offering a deeper, more varied experience for those who want to go beyond the typical routes and explore the raw beauty of Svalbard’s west coast.
