From the moment you leave Longyearbyen, the terrain opens into the vast emptiness of Adventdalen — a frozen valley so wide and silent it feels almost unreal. With no trees, minimal elevation, and endless open space, the environment takes on a lunar-like appearance, especially under the soft light of the Arctic winter.
Your journey begins with a briefing and equipment distribution, where your guide introduces you to snowmobile operation and safety procedures. Once ready, we set off across this Arctic desert, following wide, open tracks that allow you to fully absorb the scale and stillness of the surroundings.
The ride is smooth and accessible, making it ideal for first-time drivers, while still offering a genuine sense of exploration. Long, uninterrupted stretches of terrain give you the freedom to settle into the rhythm of the ride and connect with the landscape.
You can either drive your own snowmobile or, if you are booking with more than one person, choose to share one (with the possibility to swap along the way), making the experience flexible for all levels.
Our destination is the Pingo — a rare and fascinating periglacial formation created by ice expansion beneath the ground, forming a dome-shaped hill rising from the permafrost. Very few places in the world offer the opportunity to observe this natural phenomenon up close, making it a unique highlight of the tour.
Here, we stop to take in the silence and vastness of Adventdalen, warm up with hot drinks, and learn more about Arctic geology, permafrost, and climate conditions from your guide. The simplicity of the landscape, combined with its geological significance, creates a powerful and memorable experience.
Wildlife sightings are possible along the way, particularly Svalbard reindeer, which are often seen moving slowly across the valley or grazing in small groups.
Bring your own camera and tripod to capture the unique light and open landscapes. If you don’t have one, your guide will take professional photos during the tour, available for purchase afterward in digital format.
This tour offers the perfect balance between accessibility, striking landscapes, and authentic Arctic exploration — ideal for those who want a true wilderness experience without long or demanding rides.
